KQDE “16 Tunes” 1960 (00:46)
From Wally Nelskog’s KQDE, circa 1960, is this jingle “16 Tunes”. It was shared with me from a friend and I think is a real rarity. It is from an acetate disc.
*KQDE preceded KIXI, Nelskog’s Beautiful Music station at 910 which later moved to 880. Yeah, Wally got tired of Rock & Roll. – Duane Smart

Bob Liddle Obit – KIXI (2:15)

(STEVEN SMITH) In the early ’70s, I worked in the KIXI, Seattle newsroom. Back then, the AM and FM stations simulcast all the time. These cuts are tidbits of audio that I collected from way back then.

September 26, 1973 – KIXI Station ID – Wally Nelskog

This is from 1972. Being KIXI, without much jock chatter, it consists of ads and brief newscasts by well-known voices

1. is Rudy Perez….this had to be about the most played ad every morning during the news. Rudy worked approx. the 10-2 airshift

2. Dean Smith, at the time in KIXI sales, but one of the best paid voice guys in the market

3. Steve Shilling, afternoon to evening guy, who had been at KBRO pre-KIXI

4. Ken Stuart, news director. Worked AM drive through about noonish M-F

The voice before Ken Stuart is Bob Liddle. Every weekday Stuart did the news in the AM hours. And Liddle was the morning jock…if you could really call him that. Basically, KIXI had IGM automation playing unannounced music and they rolled the tapes. Then the announcers would look at the music legend and, when in the mood, they would read off the names of songs that had recently played. That applied to Liddle in the morning. Perez midday or Shilling late afternoon to evening.

  1. Election Night 1974 on KIXI, with Jim Kirkpatrick and George Herman on CBS and Ken Stuart with local returns: https://cbsrmt.thelongtrek.com/kixi/741105%20NO%20PROGRAM—ELECTION%20RETURNS_KIXI.mp3 At 42:48, the regular evening announcer is heard. Maybe Steven Smith can identify him.

This aircheck comes from a nearly complete collection of CBS Radio Mystery Theater broadcasts taped off KIXI, and later KIRO. Each recording begins and ends with a good chunk of the regular KIXI “Bright and Beautiful” format. The announcer is usually the unnamed guy heard on election night, but occasionally Rudy Perez is heard.

It’s interesting to note that they originally ran the Mystery Theater only on the AM side until they had enough complaints about the poor night signal to put it on the FM. Before that, they ran spots saying they had an application in with the FCC for 50 kW and to please send postcards saying you can’t hear us well.

There is also a batch recorded off KOIN in Portland: https://cbsrmt.thelongtrek.com/pp/PP_Disk_1-16.html Some great TM “Design ’70” jingles pop up on the earlier ones.
