The Good News & The Bad News – The Week In Review

SportsRadio 950, KJR, will be the flagship station for all the home and away games of the new Seattle Kraken NHL hockey team.
Select games will also air on KJAQ FM.
RETIRED — It’s nice when you can leave your radio gig of your own accord. Gregg Porter exits KUOW for the third time, effective March 15. Porter is declaring this to be retirement. Porter came to KUOW in 1984, left in 1995. He helped digitize the KUOW record library in 2007-2008, then returned four years later and has been a weekend announcer since then.
PROMOTED — KISW bestows a title upon Ryan Castle and Taryn Daly of Brand Manger and Assistant Brand Manager, respectively. The definition of a Brand Manager is “that person responsible for creating and designing promotional activities to drive the desired message for an organization’s service or product. Duties can include advertising, creating promotions, and generating marketing campaigns. The Brand Manager may collaborate with other departments or technical staff to ensure that the correct brand image and values are being promoted. Will supervise the production of television or magazine advertising, email campaigns and conventions or exhibitions. Must have excellent customer service and presentation skills. A degree or professional qualification in Marketing will be useful in this role.” Not certain how close this comes to the radio industry definition. We used to call these people the Promotion Director. They created memorable marketing projects at stations like KVI (Jack MacDonald).
BOUNCED — KOMO-TV Seattle weekend sports anchor Femi Abebefe Tweeted notification that he was among those laid off in the most recent rain of pink slips at Sinclair Seattle.

WHAT’S NEXT??? — Will Sinclair announce a new KPLZ morning show soon? Will it be promoted as a “must listen” morning destination for KPLZ listeners? Fans tend to lose faith after a station has canned their favorite morning jocks. The best move might be to position a known talent in mornings. A solid personality familiar to area listeners. One great jock, playing the hits, relating to the people. That is what Star 101.5 needs now.
