Word Up! KPLZ Reaches Back for Recurrents

KPLZ maintains the Star 101.5 moniker and steps only slightly into a format alteration – not a definite format switch [Monday 12/26]. KPLZ now promotes “Today’s Best Mix and Throwbacks!”

throw·back
ˈTHrōˌbak/
noun
plural noun: throwbacks
a reversion to an earlier ancestral characteristic.
“the eyes could be an ancestral throwback”
a person or thing having the characteristics of a former time.
“a lot of his work is a throwback to the fifties”

The folks at Webster’s are still wearing those green visors and using machines that operate by means of keys that strike a ribbon to transmit ink or carbon impressions onto paper. They probably listen to 880 AM KIXI.

We will have to consult the Urban Dictionary for this one.

throwback
A sudden reminder of the past. This can be brought about by hearing a song from high school, seeing an ex, puffing on a j in your old puffin spot, etc. Similar to a flashback.
Going back to New York is always a throwback…

A sudden reminder of the past? In radio, we used terms like OLDIES or RECURRENTS when describing old tunes, long dropped from the Top 40 playlist. These terms were coined by the likes of disc jockeys or programmers. The people picked up on the terms.

The dumbing down of radio has been an ongoing process for years. I have an idea for a radio promo: [a “mix” of music plays], a girl squeals “Ooooh, I like that sound” [more of the music mix] And a guy says, in his best Mac Daddy drawl, “Yeah, I be hittin’ dat.” And the ballsy-voiced announcer pukes: “Star 101.5, pimpin’ the Seattle air waves.”

mac daddy
The pimp-meister, the king of the streetwalkers, possessor of the blingest of bling-bling. The mac daddy is the man who means everything (and the only man who really means anything) to his ladies of the night.
“Oh baby – you ma mac daddy!”
“Mac Daddy” or Mack Daddy, is a term used to describe a man with an unusual power over women.
Freddy got five chicks on the south side alone… he ‘da mac daddy!

Two Seattle stations bill themselves as TACOMA stations. 104.9 KUBE FM Tacoma’s Hip Hop and Alt 102.9 KYNW FM Tacoma’s Rock Alternative. They did this based on…demographics? This doesn’t say much for Tacoma. We already have the stench of the waterfront smelters to live down.

Star 101.5 might hope to take from pop, hip hop, alternative, dance 92.5 KQMV and 93.3 KPWK which bills itself as Seattle’s New #1 For Hit Music
