I would have loved hearing Buck Owens on a live radio show! As I’ve mentioned before, I’m truly amazed at all the talented country musicians & DJs that existed in the Pacific northwest.

I interviewed Buck at his hotel room prior to a date he did in Longview, WA, many years ago. He was very nice, relaxed, talkative, and had great fondness for Puyallup/KAYE Radio, KTNT TV and the Tacoma area.

great opportunity Jason! IMO Buckaroos guitarist, the late Don Rich was one of the best. As the creator of the ‘Bakersfield twang’ – that metallic tone emanating from a Fender Telecaster guitar – he belongs with Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Jerry Reed & Roy Clark as one of the hottest country pickers ever! Didn’t Buck Owens briefly have some financial ownership in one of the ‘South end’ AM stations at one time?

Gee whiz, I sat here on my phone for almost an hour reliving early memories from my first experiences at KAYE Radio back in the early 1960’s, including the time when Buck Owens and Don Rich rehearsed “Tiger By The Tail” in Studio B, but the system’s dog ate my prose. I’ll give it another try from the laptop!

John Ross or Jason: so just what exactly was Buck Owens’ connection to KAYE if he wasn’t an owner? Did he have a live show featuring himself & his band on air?? And/or was he one of the DJs there as well. I’ve always been aware of some connection, but never an explanation of what that connection was. I know about Buck Owens’ time on KTNT-TV & AM, but not KAYE.
And John…as a retired broadcaster & also a fellow ham operator most of my life (VE7SKA) I was intrigued by your brief explanation of the ‘counterpoise’ & 390′ foot antenna. Was that a 390′ wire with “T-hat” counterpoise or a 390′ tower??

Probably the first radio station Buck Owens had partial ownership of, KAYE Puyallup. That was 1958. It didn’t last long. Buck was soon on his way to hit records and national touring. He did have a TV show on Channel 11 KTNT for a couple years, did the same on radio, KAYE hardly a spacious place to perform, but it served Buck & the Buckaroos for that time.

Jason – thanks for confirming the story about Buck & KAYE that I had I been led to believe. I remember his show on ch 11 as I think the Buckaroos were the first country I can recall on TV as a kid. What impressed me then was their western attire which I had only seen previously on “Howdy Doody”s Buffalo Bob!!
