KLAY for sale

kjunfm writes us:  Is this KLAY?  Jason verified this as ‘yes’:

TACOMA, WA MARKET   RATED MARKET FULLTIME AM with the transmit site included.  It has a construction permit for a new 250 watt FM Translator. The station is profitable, but could have great upside with an active owner/manager.  It is 5,000 watts non-directional, days  and 1,000 watts at night with a two-tower antenna system. PRICE RECENTLY REDUCED

If management is denying that the station is on the block, what do we make of this? Not sure why a broker would list a station for sale if it were not true. That would be a bad business move.

(The following is from the website advertising the sale of KLAY…)

“Clifton Gardiner & Company, LLC provides experienced and professional brokerage representation to buyers and sellers of radio stations and other media properties. We represent our clients on an exclusive basis and devote all of our resources to achieving a successful completion of a transaction. We are known for the accuracy and completeness of our Memorandums and for our very thorough search for possible buyers. Marketing a “for sale” listing is not a “passive” activity. We work hard from day one!
Our listings are only accepted on an exclusive basis so that we have complete control of the marketing process, and we maintain active and continuing contact with our clients.”

There is always a first time for error, Cliffy.

If KLAY is indeed, on the block, as they say, a denial or keeping it mum, would be nothing new. We would hope notice would be given, in order that employees have a parachute ready, and safely land in a new situation.

So, let’s hope the KLAY information was in error. And let’s hope KLAY is able to infuse more cash or advertising revenue into the business, pump up the station’s listenership (now that the FM translator will be coming on board), trickle down some of that revenue to the employees, and stay LOCAL for many years to come.

Let’s not forget that the sale of KASY Auburn was kept secret, until the afternoon an engineer walked through the KASY on-air studio during a Bill Doane newscast, hooked a cable up to the transmitter and began pumping KBSG FM Oldies over the KASY 1210 airwaves. This was right in the middle of the Carl Sawyer show on KASY. Carl had a different tune cued up. Carl and the rest of the staff had no clue this was about to happen.

For those of us that were in the business long enough to experience those meetings in the conference room, meeting the new owner of the station, then being handed a pink slip, IT IS BRUTAL.

I don’t wish that on anyone.

We need LOCAL radio in the Tacoma market. Every other radio station has pulled out of Tacoma and now broadcast from Seattle.

Us old-timers always hope a full-service local station would continue to serve the community, not to be swallowed by some heartless corporation.

I don’t know what to make of this either. I viewed the listing at Clifton Gardiner & Co. & there’s no mistake the listing is KLAY as it doesn’t fit anything else & the translator has been approved for the licensee. Jason’s comments are bang on & many of us hope KLAY can remain a relevant broadcaster to South Sound residents.
