Sam Lawson’s Audio Vault: The day I met Dick Curtis – A Class Act

I was 14 years old and it was the Sunday before Christmas in 1966. I asked my dad to drive me to KJR with the hope of getting a peek inside the station. He was always supportive of my interest in radio, and perhaps a bit curious himself, so he agreed to take me. When we arrived there were 3 people working at the station; Dick Curtis, Jimmy Rabbit, and Leslee, a request line operator (with a British accent) and they warmly welcomed us. I especially remember how genuine and gracious Dick was as he took the time to show us around. He also gave me a Beach Boys album (pictured) which Leslee, Jimmy, and Dick each autographed. I was in heaven. Of course the record album was immediately placed into high rotation on my flea-powered bedroom radio station, KFUN.

  1. Sam…so the 1966 Jimmy Rabbit at KJR is actually Roger W. Morgan who worked KISN, KYA, KOIL and many other stations. I am in contact with him occasionally…real nice guy, I had photos and comments from him in my article on O’Day and The Electric Prunes. He currently is an owner and operator of an FM station called The Legend in Coos Bay, OR.
