As a longtime news writer and writing profession, I must disagree with Mr. Hoffman. The is lede sentence is one of CONTRAST, a time-honored technique in ledes. It simply contrasted that RFK’s previous and obviously controversial vaccine comments impacted whether or not he would be confirmed. Contrast ledes present opposing ideas or viewpoints to engage reader interest by highlighting differences.
“Biden selects trans as new health secretary” Yes, I see. Here, the Washington Post spotlighted a lifestyle opposite our normal healthy, heterosexual lifestyle, that being a man with obvious mental issues being placed in a position to determine what is healthy living.
Contrast.
