Radio host Mike Webb’s killer sentenced to 20 years in prison
By CASEY MCNERTHNEY, SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF – July 9, 2009 (excerpted)
The mentally ill man who killed former talk-show host Mike Webb with an ax in 2007 was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison.
Scott Brian White, 29, was living at Webb’s Queen Anne home in the months before Webb’s body was found dismembered in the crawlspace under the house.
Webb had been missing for two months before his remains were found in June 2007. White admitted last month that the killing occurred sometime between April 13 and April 15 of that year.
…Prosecutors asked for a 12-year sentence. White’s defense attorney asked for a 10-year-term.
Ultimately, White was sentenced to 244 months – a 220-month sentence with a 24-month enhancement for using an ax.
White was arrested weeks after Webb’s body was discovered and was charged with first-degree murder. His attorneys apparently prepared to make an insanity defense because White’s mental health had been called into question.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz had said White has schizoaffective disorder, a condition that can include episodes of severe psychosis when untreated. That condition, and drug use at the time of the killing, prompted psychiatrists to conclude he likely was unable to plan a murder. Premeditation is required for a first-degree murder conviction.
But Ramsdell said Webb’s killing was one of the most brutal murders he’s seen in his 13 years as a Superior Court judge. He called White’s actions “cunning, callous and calculated.”
He was struck by the steps White took after the murder: making a to-do list to cover his tracks, selling Webb’s goods, using Webb’s Department of Social and Health Services card, and attempting to use Webb’s credit card.
The worst, he said, was masquerading as Webb. White sent text messages to Webb’s friends, telling them he was alive and well.
“In my mind, Mr. White is not some poor, unfortunate victim of circumstances in this scenario,” the judge said. “I think, and I believe the evidence supports, that he’s a master manipulator who will do
Ramsdell also said White’s behavior after the murder – having consensual sexual relations to get cash, in one case for heroin – “undermines the credibility of the defendant.”
