Clayton, nicknamed “The Professor,” was one of the country’s foremost NFL insiders in a five-decade career that included over 20 years with ESPN. He moved to the Seattle area in 1986 to cover the Seahawks for the Tacoma News Tribune and became one of the most visible and respected sports personalities in the area, initially with his newspaper work and later online and on radio and television. He left The News Tribune in 1998 to go to ESPN full-time as an NFL insider while keeping his Saturday show on KJR, later moving to 710 ESPN Seattle. Seattle Times, NFL.com
I remember the characters that called his Saturday show. One was a Notre Dame fan who spoke a (fake) Irish accent.
An encyclopedia of NFL knowledge and often funny and self-deprecating. You have to admire his dedication.
That’s so true. It less than a year, we football fans have lost John Madden and John Clayton.
I never met the guy, but I sure liked his knowledge and on-air personality. He wasn’t over the top, and he really knew his stuff. My prayers are for his family.
