Breaking News: Black News Channel Viewership Low, Cutbacks Imminent

BNC, a television news network designed to appeal to 13% of the American population, has as few as 3,000 viewers nationwide for their primetime schedule and cuts are taking place. Going forward, the network will have NO live news segments on weekends. (FTVLive)
If management had any clue as to why the network suffers such low ratings, they have not yet divulged this study. BNC went on the air in February 2020.

There are also two radio networks available to black listeners, iHeart’s Black Information Network, which launched in June 2020, and the American Urban Radio Network.

AURN is the only African-American broadcasting company with a desk in the White House (Wikipedia). This network was founded in 1972 as the Mutual Black Network, a division of the Mutual Broadcasting System. In 1981, MBN was sold to Sheridan Broadcasting, a company that had a minority holding in MBN. Sheridan, a family-based business, became the first black owned radio network. In 1991, SBN merged with the rival National Black Network, forming the American Urban Radio Networks. AURN has offices in New York City, Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and reaches an estimated 25 Million listeners each week. AURN is comprised of The American Urban Epic Network, The American Urban Pinnacle Network, and The AURN Personality Network.

Locally, 850 KHHO serves as the BIN affiliate for Puget Sound. KHHO is licensed to Tacoma. There does not appear to be an AURN affiliate in the Pacific Northwest.
iHeart has designated certain stations as BIN affiliates in cities with a large black population. There are no radio stations in Oregon or Idaho affiliated with either the BIN or AURN networks.

  1. MLK’s vision was “the content of a person’s character” not the color of a person’s skin. Today’s media’s first consideration in running a story is the skin color of the participants. Personally I don’t think MLK would like where we are at today.

  2. Much ado about nothing…Black folks in particular have been increasingly featured in various national, and local, media outlets for m any years now…such racially narrow programming is anachronistic and rather elitist….the MLK vision has come to pass, and only the extreme points of racial views are upset about it. I can remember way back, when Stokely Carmichael stated that “When integration is achieved, the only difference will be the incidence of inter-racial marriage”…think about that statement.
