Now Hear This: WRFM New York 1968

In 1968, WRFM, billing itself “Stereo 105”, and adopted a beautiful music format. The format was mostly instrumental with about one vocal every 15 minutes.
The station flipped to soft rock in 1986, as WNSR.
The airchecks presented here will focus on the lighter sound of WRFM, from 1968…

  1. “Just beautiful muuuusiiiic …”
I was all of three years old when WRFM came on the air & became one of my musically eclectic dad’s three radio stations. The other two were WNCN & QXR, which were (QXR still is!) classical. Besides our church hymnal, and all the other interesting stuff he brought home from record stores in the city, these were my major musical influences until I gained some independent control over what I heard on a daily basis. You can imagine the joyful nostalgia collections like yours are bringing me from deep in the best and nicest parts of a childhood that often wasn’t otherwise so nice. Quite a trip. Thank you forever.

      1. Jason, “the good old days” is no cliche. Those were good times, and we who were lucky enough to work in radio helped create them. Fortunately, there is internet radio that reminds us of our good old days. We old people aren’t grumpy or crabby. We’ve just learned to ignore peer pressure, think for ourselves, and fearlessly express our opinions.
