Yesterday’s “Seattle Times” (Nov 29) had an interesting article on the competition between local country competitors “100.7 The Wolf KKWF & “98.9 The Bull” KNUC. Writer Michael Rietmulder offers an amusing comparison between the two broadcasters, their promotions & on-air strategies. His portrayals are pretty accurate & give the reader a sense of each station’s approach plus plenty of examples of the artists each play. It makes for an entertaining read!
We don’t often talk about ratings here, but Tribune Media’s VP of Communications Jessica Bellucci today reports that “Q13” KCPQ  announced ratings wins across multiple time periods in the November 2018 Nielsen Ratings Book. “Q13 News This Morning” remained the #1 local morning news for the 10th consecutive month from 5-9am (M-F) with Adults 25-54. “Q13 News” at 10pm also finished #1 in late news with A25-54, posting a Monday-Sunday 0.9 average. She also notes “Q13 News” ratings on sister-station “JOEtv” KZJO-22 saw growth in late news and weekend mornings. Congrats to the “Q13” News team for a job well done!
We talk even less here about the somewhat fabricated world of radio ratings. However, after recent fun & games with Christmas formats, I couldn’t let the meteoric rise in the latest Nielsen’s of Entercom’s soft AC “94.1 The Sound” KSWD go unmentioned. After just one year, the station is now in 4th place in the Nov. 2018 PPM’s. It’s part of a trend indicating increased success for AC broadcasters who position themselves with this approach. Back east competitor iHeart Radio has flipped a few of their FM’s to a soft AC format they call “The Breeze” & if successful, it’s probable the company will launch the format in other markets. Locally, we’ll be listening to & watching the competition between “The Sound” & “Warm 106.9” KRWM, once the latter station returns to it’s normal AC format after Christmas.
