Bates Technical College TV station KBTC-TV/Tacoma went on the air for the first time, as KTPS-TV on September 25, 1961. Now KBTC, the station has served the Pacific Northwest for 56 years. Bates Technical College was called L.H. Bates Vocational-Technical Institute at the time. Bates also housed radio station KTOY 91.7 FM. Pat O’Day was just one of the Bates graduates that went on to careers in broadcasting here and across the USA.
