Steven L. Smith Archive: Dave Hall (Audio)

Jason,

I uploaded a short video that I created from the audio of a KPUG 1960s spot. The ad is for a long gone electronics shop in Lynden, WA. The voice is KPUG’s Dave Hall. He was at the station, working as a deejay, PD and in sales for more than 50 years. Some of the outdated language in the 57 year old spot made it nostalgic and I wanted to incorporate visuals of the equipment he was promoting and the era. For example, there is a reference to the new “Zenith record playing instrument.” When I was a kid, getting into music in the mid-60s, we always just called those things record players. Images include Dave Hall, the KPUG studio and authentic 1960s Zenith electronics. At the end is a KPUG promotional photo of the mid-sixties KPUG “live guys.” Dave is in the center, but keen observers will notice a very young Steve West holding up the sign. And at the top, over Dave’s head, is longtime KPUG jock and PD Bob Tria. Tria was known on the air as Bob O’Neil. I have yet to find anyone who could authoritatively identify the air name of the fellow at the back of the motorcycle.

Steve, you’re really getting good at finding and coordinating audio & vid!

    Kirk,

For an old radio guy it is fun to do, like being creative in the production room in the old days. It is amazing what is available online for those who wish to play with video.

On a KPUG visit someone (Danny Holiday in 1966?) took me into the production room & let me choose a background soundtrack, over which I could read some trail like ‘More to come – Live on KPUG!’ I was horrified by my reedy teenage voice & couldn’t wait to grow out of it.

I do not think that is Scott Campbell. I am not sure but I think not. I know, from Steve West, that the real name is Rob Oberbillig. But that did not ring a bell with me or Dick Stark as far as putting an air name with it. I will see if Steve West remembers.

You forgot to mention that Dave was also chief engineer. One time he was working on the transmitter behind me as I was doing my show when he touched something and BAM! it literally blew him across the room.

Steven that’s a great little clip – I love the footage of 60’s Main St in Lynden. That Zenith thingy Dave was plugging sounds more like a “stereo” not just a record player. Your dad needed the entire neighbourhood or a small forklift to move the new “stereo” into the living room. Those big ol’ beauties had wonderful rich sound – particularly bass, thanks to the heavy wood cabinets & well-designed speaker enclosures.

Thanks for pointing out that PD Bob Bria was “Breakfast With Bob” O’Neil – a fact I didn’t previously know.

    Kirk,
I do not think I knew that. He might have mentioned that in passing because it does sound sort of familiar, but I never thought of Dave in that capacity.

    Kirk,

Now that you mention it, I guess he was chief engineer. In the years I knew Dave he was in sales, but I had remembered that he was a PD and, as necessary, a part-time jock back when I was a kid. I was an engineer and doing anything in the transmitter when it is live is dangerous. That said, since we hated dead air, I too sometimes putzed around inside the cabinet when I should not have. I got a warning shock once and a nasty RF burn that took me by surprise.

    Jason,
I do not think that is Scott Campbell, but not positive on that. The fellow’s real name, per Steve West, is Rob Oberbillig.. But I cannot equate that with an air name. Maybe it clicks for someone else. I will ask Steve if he remembers.

Steve West said he cannot recall the air name of Rob Oberbillig. So he remains a mystery.
