Nice to see this article, including some photos that are in my old yearbooks from my time as a student at Nathan Hale (1970-73). I went on to major in communications at Seattle Pacific University, and although I wound up in newspapering as a career, I actually in my youth had three career interest areas — newspaper, broadcast news and broadcast management. My role at KNHC was small — I just did some newscasts in 1972-73 — but it was fun and gave me a taste of what it was like to be on the air. When I was at SPU, the university had a small carrier-current station at the time called KSSR, and I also did some newscasts for that. But that was the extent of my radio activity.

Thank you John. The story behind this article is that for years I had been reading/subscribing to RW..and noticed in one issue an article about
another’s radio station past – then being determined to send one to this publication about KNHC and the time I had been station manager…
So in late 2005 I started to do the research and emailed all the former students I still knew that could recall and know the ‘specs’, not being able reach Larry Adams due to his time/health and our schedules, and after finally reaching him by phone almost year later it sounded like he truly enjoyed this; sent to him THIS for his 70th in 2010: http://www.angelfire.com/wa/shookie/Gift70.html Having to recall the exact studio equipment (Thank you Evan Green and Brian Swadener along w/Scott Shangle, adding the late great Mike Dennnistoun -before he suddenly left us on 12/31/04 http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Michael-Dennistoun-1957-2005-Self-taught-1165391.php ), the music format (Thank you Dan Packard and Robert Unmacht – among others).
…only had one error in this article, where the reel-to-reel recorder was actually a SONY, and not the REALISTIC Radio Shack brand (whoops!) and was too late to correct this for the pub’s deadline that December. Sent it in around late October that year, making sure the pics were good, having to photoshop the lightning logo on the picture of Lar and Gene Arnold, both from Hale annuals of ’74 and ’76.
RW editor Paul McLane really liked it and he was very professional to work with. When it went to print, couldn’t have believed my eyes – hoping and praying that many from our days at 89.5 would read this and enjoy reflecting on their Nathan Hale radio past.
There was a follow-up to this article in RW the following April, here at: http://www.angelfire.com/wa/shookie/RWArtFollowUp.jpg

The article was also online for many years on the RW website,
but after 9 years they decided to take it offline due to company changes.

. ..the REAL amazement? Starting the article with ‘President Ford…” and guess who suddenly dies three weeks later? I mean, when you’d Google search just ‘President Ford’ during that holiday season and up comes a link to this article..’whoa’..Also when you put in, say ‘Early Roots..Rolling Stones’…or ‘Early Roots Doobie Brothers’ ..you would get the article on top in the searches because of how Google picks up words on the web.
.. Don’t believe Ford’s death had anything to do with him going into a state of shock after he might have read the article (chortle)..

It was about year later I created a follow-up ‘Early Roots’ website that grew and lasted for 7 years with old KNHC pictures and audio that is no more due to time in upkeep and developing health problems with diabetes which I am still controlling. Email me at TimShook747@Gmail.com for more – Thank you to those that really like the article to this day; and I hope it is remembered best by the Hale students from that era.
